Carmel is the historic winery of Israel. Founded in 1882 by Baron Edmond de Rothschild, an owner of Chateau Lafite in Bordeaux, Carmel owns the two largest wineries in Israel, at Rishon Le Zion and Zichron Ya'acov, and two new state-of-the-art wineries close to key vineyards, at Ramat Dalton in the Upper Galilee and Yatir Winery at Tel Arad, in the Negev.

The winery, which produces 18 million bottles, has 3,750 acres of vineyards, including vineyards in the premier wine growing regions of the Upper Galilee, Golan Heights, Judean Hills and Ramat Arad.

The winery produces wine of every style, at every price point. These range from the Carmel Limited Edition 2003, which is regarded as one of Israel's very finest wines, to the Vineyards Selected, Israel's largest selling brand.

The chief winemaker, Lior Laxer, studied in Burgundy and Bordeaux and had the opportunity to work with Michel Rolland. He also worked in   Australia at prestigious wineries.

Carmel wines have been sold in the U.S.A. since 1900, when the Carmel Wine Co. first opened in New York.
