The next time you stop in at your local BC Liquor Store, chances are good that you will see a brand new Israel Wines section. Starting this week, twenty-three stores in Vancouver and across British Columbia will carry wines from three of Israel’s top wineries: Galil Mountain Winery, Yarden Wines by Golan Heights Winery, and Dalton Wines.
“The availability of Israeli wine in an ‘Israel’ section of BC Liquor Stores is a dream come true”, said Israeli Wine Festival Chair, Rochelle Golumbia, whose determination made the dream a reality. “Winemakers in Israel are producing some beautiful wines, and they definitely have a place here alongside excellent wines from other countries around the world.”
The introduction of Israeli wines to the entire community of BC wine-lovers has been a passion for Golumbia who initiated and organized Canada’s first Israeli Wine Festival, which was held in Vancouver in 2006. “After visiting wineries in Israel, I realized that not only did Israeli wine provide a wonderful raison d’etre for a community event that could showcase Israel’s contributions to the wine world, but that the wines should be available in BC for all to enjoy.”
Golumbia’s work to promote Israeli wine before and after the wine festival, and the calibre of the wine itself, were the catalysts; and Israeli wine is now available in BC as a result of the commitment and work of the BC Liquor Distribution Branch and local importer International Cellars Inc., particularly Norman Gladstone.
“The land of Israel has been producing wines for 5,000 years”, said Norman Gladstone, Principal of International Cellars Inc. “In the last thirty years, the wine industry in Israel has adopted modern technology leading to higher quality wines which have burst onto the international scene. We are pleased and honoured to bring Israel’s top wineries to British Columbia.”
