There are well over 30 Jewish vintners and winemakers in Napa Valley, and June 23-25, 2006 marks the presentation of "L'Chaim, To Life: A Weekend Celebrating Our Roots," with over 30 Jewish vintners and winemakers of Napa Valley. For the first time, these Napa Valley vintners are collaborating on a benefit weekend to celebrate the ancient roots and rich traditions of Judaism and wine. The event aims to illustrate the agricultural heritage of the Jews and reinforce the cultural and spiritual link between the Jewish people and the land, and the special role in Judaism played by the "fruit of the vine." Since Biblical times, the use of wine to celebrate life has been an important part of Jewish tradition: L'Chaim, to life.
The group estimates that around 8 percent of vintners, winemakers and growers in Napa Valley are Jewish. The list of participants includes such names as Diamond Creek, Silver Oak, Rudd, Clos Pegase, Honig, Hagafen and St. Supéry, as well as boutiques and/or newer wines on the scene, such as Amuse Bouche, Bighorn, Frank Family, Covenant, Judd's Hill, Matthiasson and Solorosa. Domaine du Castel of Israel will be represented as well.
