>> Rogov's Tastes » North Israel -December 2007

Graham Green traveled with his aunt and John Steinbeck traveled with Charlie but when I'm in the Galilee I often travel with Oded. On 18 December my day started in the Upper Galilee and took me through Zichron Ya'akov and finally to the Margalit winery not far from Hadera. My thanks as always to Oded Chai and to the winemakers who opened their doors to me and gave me extensive tastings and good company..

One note on which to ponder: Athough many of the wines I re-tasted during this two day voyage (17 and 18 December) showed a high level of consistency between this and earlier tastings, some showed so dramatically different and almost invariably better that one cannot help but wonder in a few cases at least precisely what happened between tastings. Among the possibilities – wines coming into their own, wines that have been somehow "doctored", separate bottlings from different batches or even different grapes.

Yiftah'el

Yiftah'el, Sangiovese Nouveau, 2007: Light enough ruby red that one might take it for a rose, with super-soft tannins and simple but pleasant red berry and cherry flavors. A pleasant light quaffer. Drink up. Score 83. (Re-tasted 18 Dec 2007)

Yiftah'el, Merlot, 2003: Light garnet in color, medium-bodied, with soft tannins and forward red berry and currant fruits. Pleasant but not complex and starting to show its age. Drink up. Score 84. (Re-tasted 18 Dec 2007)

Yiftah'el, Sangiovese, 2004: Showing dramatically better than at earlier tastings. Dark garnet, medium-bodied, with soft tannins and a hint of spicy wood from its 8 months in oak. Margalit

Note: My most recent earlier visit to the Margalit winery was just 11 months ago (Sunday, 14 January 2007) during which time I tasted from the 2005 releases and the 2006 wines in barrels. This return trip had me tasting from the 2006 wines which are soon to be bottled and the 2007 wines in barrel. As might be expected from Yair and Assaf Margalit, the consistency between tastings proved to be remarkable. The 2006 wines are still in barrels but because they are scheduled for bottling in the not-too distant future, I am listing those as advance rather than barrel tastings.

Margalit, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2006 (Advance Tasting): Almost inky black in color, offering a generous mouthful of currant, cherry, blackberry and blueberry fruits, those matched by layers of sweet spices. Big, broad and intense with now soft and well integrating tannins, the wine yields on the palate to show grace and elegance, and closes with a long, fruity finish. Best 2009–2015. Score 92. (Re-tasted 18 Dec 2007)

Margalit, Cabernet Franc, 2006 (Advance Tasting): Dark garnet towards royal purple, medium to full-bodied, with rich black currant, cherry and blackberry fruits matched nicely by floral and light earthy aromas and flavors, all coming to a long, round and caressing finish. Best 2009-2013. Score 91. (Re-taste 18 Dec 2007)

Margalit, Enigma, 2006 (Advance Tasting): Full-bodied, subtle and round, a softly tannic blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Cabernet Franc and 12% Merlot. Opens with red currants and red plums, goes to black cherries and a pleasing light spiciness and closing with a long fruity and persistent finish. Drink from release–2012. Score 92. (Re-tasted 18 Dec 2007)

Margalit, Cabernet Sauvignon, Special Reserve, 2006 (Advance Tasting): Cabernet Sauvignon blended with about 25% of Margalit’s special Petite Sirah. Full-bodied, dense and intense, but at the same time round and yielding, offering up chocolate-covered cherries, cassis, wild berry and kirsch, those balanced nicely by spicy-cedary oak. Long, complex and destined for elegance. Best 2009–2015. Score 92. (Re-tasted 18 Dec 2007)

Margalit, Merlot, 2007 (Barrel Tasting): Not so much an infant as an embryo but already showing medium- to full-bodied, earthy, with purple fruits and with big but velvety tannins and ripe purple plum, currant and blackberry fruits. Long and soft on the palate, with a finish that goes on and on. Best from 2010-2014. Tentative Score 91-93. (Tasted 18 Dec 2007)

Margalit, Cabernet Franc, 2007 (Barrel Tasting): Still in its infancy but already showing medium- to full-bodied, with an overlay of chamomile highlighting currant and blackberry fruits, those on a background of soft, near-sweet tannins and sweet red peppers. Destined for elegance. Best from 2010-2013, perhaps longer. Tentative Score 91-93. (Tasted 18 Dec 2007)

Margalit, Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 (Barrel Tasting): If this one doesn't pop your eyes wide open, nothing will. Made from intentionally early-harvested grapes, full-bodied, green and tannic, with brambly undertones and black licorice on first attack, those yielding to blackcurrant, tobacco and espresso coffee aromas and flavors. The soldness of the structure dominates at this early stage but as this one develops it promises to open nicely to highlight black fruits and perhaps hints of green olives and truffles. Approachable by 2009 but best starting only in 2010 and then cellaring well until 2015 or longer. Tentative Score 92-94. (Tasted 18 Dec 2007)

Margalit, Enigma, 2007 (Barrel Tasting): Not yet a final blend but with components of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, all showing full-bodied, with caressing and gently mouth-coating tannins to highlight blackberry, black cherry and currant fruits, those supported nicely by herbal and earthy notes. Remarkably long. Best 2010-2017. (Tasted 18 Dec 2007)
