Following are nine tasting notes – all but the first tasted or re-tasted today in my tasting room, the first tasted at the press tasting on 31 March. My thanks to the winery for their courteous gesture of sending me the wines for tasting.
I have several magnum bottles at hand of the Zemora wines and those will be tasted within the next 7-10 days.
Best Rogov
Zemora, Special Reserve, 2004: The third time I have tasted this wine, twice from barrels and once on release and every time it seems like a completely different wine. No wonder, perhaps, with the winemaker's notes stating that the wine is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rear label showing a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (85% and 15% respectively). Based on the current tasting, a dark garnet wine, medium- to full-bodied, with chunky, sharp-edged tannins and showing blackberry and purple plum fruits. A distinctly country-style wine. Drink now. Score 84. K (Re-tasted 31 Mar 2008)
Zemora, Cabernet Sauvignon, Special Reserve, 2004: Made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Dark, almost inky garnet, full-bodied, with gripping tannins that seem not to want to integrate and reflecting its 24 months in barriques with generous smoky oak that tends to hide the black fruits that are here. Heavy-handed and one dimensional. Drink now. Score 84. K (Re-tasted 1 May 2008)
Zemora, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005: Full-bodied, deep royal-purple in color, with once firm tannins integrating nicely now and reflecting its 14 months in medium and heavy-toasted French oak with a generous, toasted cedar overlay. On the nose and palate opens to reveal blackberries, blueberries, cassis and vanilla. Moderately long. Drink now–2010. Score 85. K (Re-tasted 1 May 2008)
Zemora, Castra, Red, 2004: Deep inky garnet, this full-bodied blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz and Petit Verdot (65%, 20%, 10%, 3% and 2% respectively) spent 24 months in new French oak. Generous toasty wood balanced by firm tannins. On the nose and palate purple plums, blackberries and cherries, those leading to a long, spicy finish. Primarily for those who like their wines with an ample overlay of oak. Drink now–2011. Score 88. K (Re-tasted 1 May 2008)
Zemora, Castra, Black, 2004: The mirror image of the Castra Red, in this case with the amounts of Merlot and Cabernet reversed, containing 65% Cabernet and 20% Merlot. Full-bodied, with generous wood and firm tannins complemented by blackberries, black cherries, currants and dark chocolate and, on the moderately long finish, a hint of smoked meat. Drink now–2011. Score 88. K (Re-tasted 1 May 2008)
Zemora, Merlot, 2005: Dark royal purple, showing generous spices and smoke from the barriques in which it developed and tannins that while felt give the sensation of flabbiness. Opens to show simple berry and cassis notes. Drink now. Score 83. K (Tasted 1 May 2008)
Zemora, Cabernet Franc, 2005: Deep garnet, full-bodied, with now softening tannins and smoky oak opening to reveal plum and black cherry notes, those supported by leather and cedar all leading to vanilla and spices on a moderately long, near-sweet finish. Drink now-. Score 87. K (Tasted 1 May 2008)
Zemora, Syrah, 2005: Youthful royal-purple, medium-bodied, with somewhat sharp tannins and perhaps too generous spicy oak. On the nose and palate berry and black cherry aromas and flavors but overall, one dimensional. Drink now. Score 84. K (Re-tasted 1 May 2008)
Zemora, Petit Verdot, 2005: Not at all living up to its barrel-tasting promise. Dark purple, medium- to full-bodied, with sharp-edged tannins and quite generous spicy oak. Currant and blackberry fruits here but those outweighed by the oak and a sharpness that cannot be avoided. Drink now. Score 82. K (Tasted 1 May 2008)
