Terravino, Israel’s first international wine tasting competition was held in June 2006. The competition was held in Tel Aviv under the auspices of the O.I.V. Eleven international judges joined Israeli experts to taste more than 400 hundred wines entered from 16 countries.

The results were announced during a Gala Dinner by compere, Mr. Meni Peer and competition organisor, Mr. Haim Gan, of Ish Anavim.

The most notable winner was Carmel Winery, which was presented with no less than 13 prizes. These included one Double Gold, five Gold Medals and four Silver Medals. They also won the prize for the best wine in the competition, the best kosher wine and the International Champion Winery.

Barkan Winery won two Gold Medals and five Silvers Medals. They also won the award for the best wine between $ 3 to 5 dollars a bottle and an award for the winery with most wines in the lower medal positions.

The Golan Heights Winery won one Double Gold, two Gold Medals and four Silver Medals. They were also awarded the prize for the best winemaker, whose four highest scoring wines had the highest average in the competition.

The best boutique winery prize went to Odem Mountain Winery from the Golan Heights for their Odem Merlot Reserve 2003.  Hans Sternbach also won a Double Gold. The other two Israeli wineries to win Double Golds were Binyamina and Recanati. Twelve Double Golds were awarded: six to Israel; the other six to wines from Austria, Argentina, Chile and Italy.

Apart from those mentioned: Recanati, Margalit, Psagot and Yatir wineries received two Gold Medals each.

The International Grand Champion for the best wines in the competition were awarded to Hafner Family Estate from Austria for their Hafner Gruner Veltliner Icewine 2002  and to Carmel Winery for their Gewurztraminer Late Harvest, Sha’al Vineyard, 2002.
